Wimmins.

Ok!  I found that quote!

So, compare O'Connor's Lucynell (Senior)'s comments (abridged): ""You want you an innocent woman, don't you? [...] One that can't talk," she continued, "can't sass you back or use foul language. That's the kind for you to have." (1955)

With Azar Nafisi's quote from Reading Lolita in Tehran (She's deliberately misquoting Jane Austen here):

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Muslim man, regardless of his fortune, must be in want of a nine-year-old virgin wife.”  (2008)

Which is to say... of course, that a good WOMAN must be so hard to find.

Sigh.

For Next Week!

These are long and full of detail.  Do NOT read them on the train before class, and definitely do NOT try to read them in the 10 minutes before class, or while you're supposed to be doing the opening writing.  Ahem.

Monday:

Flannery O'Connor:

The Life You Save May Be Your Own

Wednesday:

Joyce Carol Oates:

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?

Go into super-analysis hyperdrive with these stories--no detail is too little!  I hope someone can clear up a mystery I've never been able to figure out in this last story.  :)  (I'm looking at you, Sam.)

My notes from today 5/6

Wed:  The other story!  ("Beautiful Monsters") And be prepared to tell me what you want to do regarding groups.

Next week!  My favorite stories!  One more Flannery, one Joyce Carol Oates, I’ll put them both up soon.

The week after!  Group work in class!

After that!  Group presentations!

After that!  SUMMER ZOMG.

Group Project Ideas

Ok, so here's what group projects for the short stories generally look like.  If you have a better idea, you can run them past me.

You can choose to work alone, make your own group, have me assign you to a group.  If you make your own group, I may assign an additional person to it if necessary, so be forewarned.

You can use any story in the anthology, but you can only use one of the stories we've discussed in class if your group is 4 people or larger!

Projects:

Talk show interviewing characters (and writer?)
Newscast reporting on the action in the story objectively
Newspaper reporting on the action in the story objectively
Blogger/FB/Twitter of the characters
Board game
Mock Court:  Trials for Characters
Scrapbooks
Illustrated quotes:  minimum 20)
Limericks (minimum 20)

Be prepared to present these on our last class.
